Did you ever got caught passing notes in class? I definitely did. As with so many things from my childhood, it’s funny looking back on those moments: I remember the stakes being just so high. Trying to make sure the teacher didn’t spot us as we slide the note across the desk or leaned over to show the funny message we’d written on our calculator.
My favorite part was watching a message ripple out across the classroom. If I’m being honest, I wasn’t usually the person who started the note-passing, but I could see it make its way from desk to desk. See classmates eye someone or light up as they learned the joke.
It was a like a spiderweb of knowledge, which you could only spot if the light was just right. A subtle network – shaped by the placement of desks – but charting its own path just the same.
Welcome to Passing Notes – Season 2 of the History of Education Society’s podcast. In this season, we’re going to talk with the people who have kept passing notes. Each episode you’ll hear from historians of education and other scholars whose research intersects with the field in exciting and thought-provoking ways. They’re the kind of people who enjoy making new connections and who build their own networks of knowledge. Whether bridging higher education and technology studies or connecting gender and teaching, these researchers are building connections across disciplines. I’ll talk to them about how they work with unusual sources, draw upon novel methodologies and the ways that interdisciplinary work can inform the history of education.
My name is Michael Donnay and I’ll be your host for Passing Notes. I’m a master’s student studying digital humanities and explore interdisciplinary work a lot as part of my own studies. Join me this season as together we learn about some of the most exciting research in the history of education. Passing Notes premieres on February 14th with new episodes dropping every 2 weeks.
