The Editorial Board of History of Education is seeking expressions of interest in the role of Book Reviews Editor. History of Education is a leading international journal which is listed in the Thomson Reuters Social Science Citations Index. The term of office will be from April 15, 2025 until December 31, 2030. The current editor, Rebecca Swartz, will be available until May 15, 2025, to mentor the new editor in the role.
An average of seven reviews appear in four of the six issues published in each annual volume. Reviews are commissioned (occasionally unsolicited reviews are accepted). A recent innovation, which the journal is keen to develop further, is the inclusion of reviews of significant books in languages other than English. To that end, the journal now publishes book reviews of different lengths and scope: brief synopses of new books that are between 300 and 500 words and review essays of two (or more) books that have been written in the last five years (up to 5,000 words). Most reviews are of a single book (1250-1500 words). For more information, please refer to Swartz, R. (2023). Editorial: non-English books for review. History of Education, 52(1), 7–8. https://doi.org/10.1080/0046760X.2022.2053592.
The duties of the Book Reviews Editor are to: order review copies of books from publishers; maintain and enlarge the electronic database of reviewers that has been built up over the last few years; commission reviews of books received; prepare for proof stage the reviews received (consulting with reviewers over queries as necessary); read and correct the proofs of reviews prepared by the journal publisher; consult with the editors of the journal over matters of editorial policy; present a verbal or written report on the book reviews section of the journal annually to the Editorial Board. A small level of expenses is available to cover administrative costs and postage.
Applicants for the role are invited to send to the editors a short (up to 500 word) outline of the approach they would take to the role over the five-year period. This should be in the form of an email attachment addressed to all three editors and to be received by them no later than March 15th 2025:
Heather Ellis: [email protected]
Lottie Hoare: [email protected]
Stephanie Olsen: [email protected]
Applicants are also welcome to correspond with the current role-holder about the position. Contact Rebecca Swartz: [email protected]
