It is with great sadness that the History of Education Society received notice of Joyce Goodman’s death in January 2025. Joyce was well-known and respected by so many members of the Society. She served in a number of important leadership, editorial and administrative roles, in the Society and further afield, including as President of the Society; co-editor of both History of Education and the History of Education Researcher; secretary of the International Standing Conference for the History of Education (ISCHE); and on the advisory board of the Albert Greenfield Digital Centre for the History of Women’s Education at Bryn Mawr College, USA.

Joyce’s academic and intellectual standing was highly valued and widely recognised. She was Professor Emerita of History of Education at the University of Winchester where she was a key figure in Cluster for the History of Women’s Education (CHEWE) as well as a research associate at the Centre de Recherché Sur Les Liens Sociaux (CERLIS). She was widely published in respected journals, monographs and edited collections where she pursued innovative theoretical, methodological and empirical work relating to the history of women’s education, a field which she enriched considerably. She was recognised by the award of an honorary life membership of ISCHE and an honorary membership of Network 17 of the European Educational Research Association (EERA).

Beyond all that, she was simply ‘Joyce’, a friend, supporter, mentor and respected colleague who will be missed by us all. Obituaries and events celebrating Joyce’s life are being organised.
