Catherine Freeman is completing her PhD at the University of Greenwich. Her research explored femininity in girls’ education and employment in Surrey between 1870 and 1914. Concurrently, she has worked as a part time library assistant, which has also been useful for easy access to a wide range of local history books. She has been a member of the History of Education Society throughout her doctoral studies and has enjoyed winning bursaries from the society to attend its conferences, ISCHE and the History of Education Doctoral Summer School.

Catherine is the administrator to the IHR LIfe Cycles seminar and secretary to the Children’s History Society. In 2021, as a co-opted member of the HES executive committee representing the CHS, she co-hosted  an online PGR/ECR writing retreat with the then HES PGR reps and organised an online international conference. In 2022, she facilitated an online gallery on X (then Twitter) for PGRs to present an aspect of their work through an image and five Tweets. Catherine is the current Richard Aldrich Fellow (whose term will finish on January 31st 2026) and transitioning to her new role as Book Reviews Editor.
