The Editorial Board of History of Education is seeking expressions of interest in the role of Special Section Editor. We are looking for a dynamic and innovative scholar who will help nurture and grow the ‘Workspace’ section of the journal.

History of Education is a U.K.-based leading international journal which is listed in the Social Sciences Citations Index. The term of office would be five (5) years commencing from January 2026 at the latest.

The ‘Workspace’ section of History of Education will feature dynamic articles on special themes related to current and future issues in the history or historiography of education. Themes will vary and submissions may include articles or submissions in other formats on gender (including transgenderism and/or gender nonconformity), sexuality (including LGBTIQ+ foci), ethnicity (with attention to people of colour, indigenous communities and minority groups, migrants, asylum seekers etc.), dis/ability, and related intersectionality; media/vehicles/technologies and genres/modes of communication and re/presentation, sites of conservation and regulation (including repositories of digital material, artefacts, built and designed environments, and tools of (dis/mis/)information; public history foci; childhoods, youths and adult education; pedagogical approaches; science/knowledge and networks/nodes of circulation; emotions and senses; foods/diets and associated initiatives and institutions; arts, sports and other areas/branches of embodied creation; theories and methods to pry open these and other topics. Submissions, moreover, may include ‘conversation’ or ‘provocation’ pieces and reviews, as well as other contributions that address the current ‘Workspace’ brief.

Themes and future directions of the section will be determined in consultation with the main editors. As with all scholarly work submitted to the journal, any work submitted to ‘Workspace’ would be fully peer reviewed. We hope that the section will help to expand the readership of the journal in new directions and provide an opportunity for scholars to contribute in ways beyond the traditional research article.

The duties of the Special Section Editor are to: evaluate submissions sent to the journal on appropriate topics and solicit work for agreed-upon ‘Workspace’ themes; oversee the peer-review process; prepare for proof stage the submissions received (consulting with authors over queries as necessary); read and correct proofs of submissions prepared by the journal publisher; liaise with the main journal editors over matters of editorial policy; present a verbal or written report on the ‘Workspace’ section annually to the Editorial Board. A small contribution toward expenses is available annually from Taylor and Francis to cover administrative costs.

Applicants for the role are invited to send the main editors a short (up to 500 word) outline of the approach they would take to the role over the five-year period. This should be in the form of an email attachment addressed to all three editors and to be received by them no later than 30 October 2025:

Heather Ellis: [email protected]

Lottie Hoare: [email protected]

Stephanie Olsen:  [email protected]

Applicants are also welcome to correspond with the current role-holder of ‘Workspace’, who is stepping down from the role. Contact Geert Thyssen: [email protected].
