The editorial board of History of Education, together with the History of Education Society (HES, UK), seeks to appoint a new editor or editors to replace Heather Ellis, Mark Freeman, and Stephanie Olsen, whose term ends in December 2024. This will be for a five-year term of office from January 2025 to December 2029 inclusive. A handover period with the current editorial team would be arranged.

History of Education is a leading international journal which is listed in the Clarivate Analytics Social Science Citations Index. It publishes between 30 and 40 articles a year, as well as book reviews and a separate section entitled ‘Workspace: Dialogues, Iterations, Provocations’. Book reviews and Workspace have separate editors, currently Rebecca Swartz and Geert Thyssen respectively, and the new editor(s) will be expected to work with them and the editorial board on the further development of the journal.

The editors are responsible for receiving submissions, organising the peer review process, commissioning and reviewing proposals for special issues, creating virtual special issues, making final decisions on publication, and overseeing the proof-reading process. They set the overall strategic direction of the journal, and work closely with the managing editor and production editor at the publishers, Taylor & Francis. They report to executive committee meetings of the HES and appoint the editorial board, which meets once a year. Taylor & Francis pay an allowance to support the editors in the work of promoting the journal.

The editorial board, HES and Taylor & Francis expect the editors to demonstrate in their application their capacity to manage the workload associated with the role.

Applicants for the role are invited to send the following documents to the President of the HES, Dr Jonathan Doney ([email protected]) by Sunday 31 March 2024:

  • CVs of the applicant or each co-applicant;
  • a statement of editorial intent (max. 2 pages) explaining the applicant(s)’ vision for the journal;
  • and a covering letter (max. 2 pages) outlining the relevant experience of the applicant(s).

    Potential applicants are invited to correspond with the
    current editors about any aspect of the role.
